I take screen imiages different ways depending on my need for quality and type of output.
Most often I use the free program Google Picasa. When Picasa is running I hit Ctrl-Print Screen and the screen image is copied to a folder in My Pcitures (using Windows XP OS). Picasa offers a number of simple image modification options. Mostly I just use Crop. My next choice is an old (free) demo called LView Pro. (Menu picks - Edit/Cpature/Desktop) This gives me more control over the captured image including resizing and some more useful filters than are in Picasa. This is an unsupported program that I can share with you iif you like. I will regret when Windows "goes beyond" the ability to run this simpkle and useful program. I rarely use the native screen capture in WIndows (Print Screen key and Alt-Print Screen as mentioned by another). This method puts a bitmap of the screen image on the Windows clipboard. You can past the screen image using a paste command.
