I just tried another thing:
1. Renamed "display.png" to "aaadisplay.png"
2. Ran Dia again.
At this point, I get the same error message but with "transaction.png"
instead of "display.png" and reporting 47 more error messages instead of
49. Also the icon that the display would use is different, looks like a
right triangle with a blue "C" over it.
I'm guessing that if Dia doesn't find a needed icon ".png" file that it
might substitute some dummy icon. So I believe this might show that
indeed Dia is FINDING the .png icon file, but is unable to display it
for some reason. My guesses may be wrong, but I'm grasping at straws now.

OK, found it, on my computer it is:
/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/gdk-pixbuf-2.0/gdk-pixbuf-query-loaders
and executing it gives this screen and cache output:
