Oops, I forgot to report back.

The re-install seems to have solved the problem, or at least reduced the
occurrence rate so that I can't tell there is a problem.

It could be I was making a shortcut while doing some other activity.  That
feels right - I may have been working too fast for the program and it would
stumble.  I will know to think about that if it happens again.
