Octavio is correct. Create a line. Turn on object snap. Create a text entity. Move it so the text connection point snaps to the line midpoint.
I don't know what you mean that the text has no properties. If I right click I get a menu with properties as an option, or if I double click on the text I get properties. You will have to be more specific about the text properties.
