run_dia.sh is used to test out dia without installing it. If you install
dia correctly, the run_dia.sh script is not needed (in fact, if you use
it, you will be running the copy of dia in the build directory -- not the
installed copy).
For your problem, fixing it should have been as easy as:
change to the objects/custom directory
make the cuanges to custom_object.c
rerun make
run "make install" as root
That should have fixed the problem.
