Actually the very same problem is now with gnumeric.
Since I'm rather lame in that you could have a look
at gnumeric discussion list yourself. I can also
try to check whether there was any of the list discussion
(I initiated it since I asked for iso8859-2 Polish fonts support).
Some things were improved for that in gnome-print but
potetntial further paths were discussed as well.
I guess this is a common problem for all GNOME applications.
