Don't know if I can help, but here is a start:
1. Since it is asking about x fonts, I presume you are installing on
some *NIX box. What OS? What version of the OS? Did you install
from rpm or source or ?. If from source, what did you use as the
configura arguments?
2. Does X windows work in general on that box. e.g., can other
applications use helvitica and courier?
3. Have you done anything interesting to fonts (e.g, special
fontserver, installed freetype, etc.).
