Advances in the information and communication technologies and the emergence
of a global network society present new challenges for research and policy
making. The seminar, organised by the research project Global Challenges of
eDevelopment of Hypermedia Laboratory of the University of Tampere, aims at
addressing ways to bridge the wide gaps, or digital divides, that are
characteristic of the current information society. One feature of the new
technologies is that they enable new kinds of freedom and sharing. This can
boost, for example, societal participation of citizens and collaboration in
sciences and technology development. However, in order for these and other
benefits to materialise, a framework aiming at sustainability in its all
aspects would be necessary. A part of such framework would be a system of
innovation and intellectual property that addresses the basic needs and
rights of the people. The seminar brings together researchers, students,
experts and policy makers working on these issues internationally.

The programme will be organised following the seminar themes:

Theme 1: Freedom and Sharing in the Global Network Society
- information technologies and societal participation
- open and collaborative models (free software, open content, open access)

Theme 2: Globally Sustainable Information Society
- ecologically, socially, culturally and economically sustainable
technologies
  and cultures
- balanced innovation systems and intellectual property regimes
