You are invited to Tech Day 2005, a day to celebrate the opportunities technology provides and leaders who have contributed to the field of technology.
On February 15, 2005, Riis Settlement will be hosting Tech Day 2005. This year Riis Settlement will present Dr. Edward Tunstel, a former resident of Queens, and now Senior Robotics Engineer for Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California, the lead research and development center for robotics for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the Riis Settlement Leader in Technology Award. A ceremony in the evening from 6:30pm 8:30pm will celebrate his contribution to the field of technology and to give Riis Settlements Lego robotics team an opportunity to present their robot, designed and programmed by the youth and was used in the New York City wide competition on February 5, 2005. The ceremony will also have an opening reception, volunteer awards, a raffle of technology prizes, and workshops such as "Create Your Own Business Card" and "Troubleshooting Your Computer". The event is free and open to the public. Earlier in the day, Riis Settlements Lego robotics team, ages 10 to 14 years old, will have an opportunity to meet and interact with Dr. Edward Tunstel, an inspiration to many students. During her participant on the Lego team, Lauren, ten-years-old, told her mother that she didnt want to be an ice-skater anymore, but now wants to build robots that go to Mars. She cant wait to meet Dr. Edward Tunstel, a real robotics engineer. Tech Day 2005 is being held as part of the nationwide public awareness campaign Black Family Technology Awareness Week. These events are to encourage minority representation in the science, math, engineering, and technology (SMET) careers and is supported by Riis Settlements Center for Technology and Science, Minority Education Initiatives Education Office of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and Career Communications Group, Inc.
