Re: Recent discussion on DDN about Simputer

This is in slashdot.org today.

An anonymous reader writes /"LinuxDevices.com has published a brief update on the much-heralded Simputer <http://www.linuxdevices.com/news/NS3539522586.html>, the Linux-based 'platform for social change' that was intended to bring inexpensive, easy-to-use computers to rural Indian villages. In the last 12 months, only about 4,000 units have been sold -- well below the planned 50,000+ units. Three Simputer models priced from $240 to $480 <http://www.linuxdevices.com/news/NS5108992809.html> were introduced by PicoPeta <http://amidasimputer.com/> one year ago, whereas the original goal was a maximum of $200. A cost-reduced redesign is reportedly in the works."

/On a related note, in the previous discussion here about
Simputer, I am not sure if there was discussion of
the >= 2 other similar projects.

One is by a team which includes (is lead by?) Nicholas Negroponte and
the other is one by Raj Reddy at CMU.
/
/I am not sure if these two have been released yet.

Has anyone here developed software for the Simputer?

I am aware of the criticisms of focusing on this type of platform; nevertheless,
I'd be interested in what people here know about what's been done.

Best,

WJM
