>>Anyway. They have various programs where they need computers and a decent
set of servers to keep them running.

And so I have been wondering if anyone out there knows the best strategies,
organizations, websites or methods to request computer hardware /software to
be donated to a developing country NGO by large organizations.

Granting bodies don't fund technology -- they fund **missions**. What is the mission of your initiative? As a result of the activities of the NGO you are helping, what "good" is happening (or is hoped to happen)? Whom does this initiative serve? If you are looking for funding, look for granting bodies that fund iniatives similar to the NGO's that you are helping, in terms of its goals and whom it serves. For instance, if it serves to help people with disabilities gain access to education and employment opportunities, look for grants that have funded such initiatives in the past.

Also, look for companies that have affiliate offices near you. Are these affiliate offices close enough for you to invite representives to come onsite to the NGO and see its work? Inviting representatives from companies, embassies and the media to come onsite to the NGO is an excellent way to build credibility, and means that you will have face-to-face contact with people who can ultimately help you get donations.

Is there information about the NGO on the web? A web site with information about the NGO's staff, yearly budget, past successes, etc. can help add credibility -- many funding bodies will "google" to find out more about an NGO they are considering to fund. If one "googles" your NGO, what would they find? They should find enough information to say, "Wow, this is a well-run NGO that will do great things with our company's donation."

There are some leads on finding computer donations at the UN Information Technology Service (www.unites.org), under "resources."
