Yes, this is why the online discussions with WIPO were important... but
it's difficult to explain to people that, as Michael said, copyrights do
not enter the public domain in our lifetime anymore. This isn't a
secret, it's real - and many countries have based their copyright laws
on that of the United States, which means... global reform is on the
plate for those who would like things to enter the public domain before
they die.

I suppose that it's a lot to consider given present workloads... but
even if we do get everyone connected, they may not be able to access
anything without paying a toll. I wrote something on that recently - a
very long winded rant:

This week I hope to tackle the agricultural and software issues related
to this on the weblog... I have a lot of material I've been collecting
on these things because I was trying to understand what is going on.
Hard to believe that this started with a chicken farm.
