EDUCATION: COLLEGE: UNDERGRADUATE : RESEARCH: SKILLS AND TRAINING : LIBRARY: INSTRUCTION : INFORMATION LITERACY: Getting the Library Back Into Undergraduate Research: The Library Prize for Undergraduate Research
Many undergraduate students do not get pertinent or substantial training in the use of library research resources and databases in their elementary secondary school education so that upon matriculation in a college, they lack knowledge of how to use databases, online catalogs, reference tools and so forth. The teaching of research methods to students at the college undergraduate level is frequently quite limited, as well. Proactive programs in academic libraries that get students to conduct research projects and utilize library resources as a core resource for these research efforts are important stimuli for developing a college environment that emphasizes the need for undergraduates to learn research skills so as to better prepare themselves for graduate school and research oriented careers.
