we can just wait and blame someone else for not doing anything. Dear Taran,I am
new to this list but have been trying to get people to use computers/technology
for over 13 years now. Last week I begged two wonderful volunteers that do
great things for my community to JUST get e-mail through the local library. For
their own safety, please. They finally said that they could do this. I have
begged over 20 non-profits in our area to have back up systems in case of an
emergency or their computers crashing. And they still don't have back up
systems. Very few of our non-profits can afford an IT person, and if they can
they haven't been keeping up and don't have back up systems set up. I am quite
sure that Florida non-profits and many people are i!
 n
the same boat. Monday I attended the NTen Conf. in DC talking about lessons
learned. On Wednesday I attended a Communities Connect for all of Washington
State and realized how many rural communities don't have even the basics. What
I learned from the above conferences is the easiest thing to do in a disaster
is to get the hardware, software, networking, connectivity. and tech ie stuff
done. The hardest is getting the people to learn to use the communication
prior to a NEED. Tomorrow we are putting on a Tech Fair for our community
non-profits and volunteers. See http://www.cbpin.org/techfair/. As a social
worker first, I am telling my colleagues that they need to learn to use the
computer, especially e-mail, if they are to be socially responsible. Without
e-mail during a disaster or emergency they would be helpless. I hope this
works, for everyones sake. Ronda EvansRECA (Realizing Every Community Asset)
