Karen: You asked some great questions! Some definitions:
Community blogs are predominantly websites where many authors can post journal entries on a single space and where people can respond by commenting on posts to the community blog. I think global voices is an example. Blogging communities are collections of individual blogs (potentially tens, hundreds, or thousands) tied together by a larger common value or theme. Conversations can occur on the individual blogs, between the blogs, on a common messageboard that binds the invidudal blogs together in a community, or across other blogs in the blogosphere. The I think the example of http://www.ibrattleboro.com/ and http://www.digitaldividenetwork.org/ are examples. These definitions came from a blog post from Steve Shu in the context of a question: "Can community blogs be facilitated?" Several of us engaged in a "Cross-blog" conversation about the techniques for blog community Here's a post on my blog that summarizes and points to the various discussions. Feel free to jump in with your questions or observations.
