New wine or new bottles, old wine or old bottles, or any combination
of same, my take is that universities should not graduate anyone who
cannot read and understand complex materials.

Grade inflation has lead to degree mills, even from institutions with
all the pedigree that the established world of education can confer.

Where is the REQUIREMENT that if you can't read, you don't get to
move on to the next step on the education ladder?

As a collegiate instructor who uses the "new bottle" of computer-aided
instruction, I quite agree. However, I've found using the "new bottle" helps
students understand complex written materials. I use computer forums to
facilitate students discussion of novels and essays. In other words,
traditional
written materials. But the new forum that allows understanding to develop
through discussion.
