   there's a nice, brief mention of the digital divide network at the end of
this article in the los angeles times today.  free software enthusiast lou
dolinar is the author of the article -- which originally appeared in the
newspaper titled newsday.

Way back in 1981, I bought my first computer, an Osborne I "portable" that
tipped the scales at 26.2 pounds and had a 3.5-inch-wide monitor, a 4-megahertz
processor, and in the absence of a hard drive, a pair of 5 1/4-inch removable
floppy drives.... (snip)


Meanwhile, about that paradigm thing: Haller points out that outfits such as the
Digital Divide network (www.digital divide.net) are trying to spread computer
literacy worldwide, even as hoped-for $300 PCs still are out of range of much of
the world's population. "Why can't we have one or two computers configured
centrally, that everyone can use, and give everyone a thumb drive for $10?" he 
asks.
