Hi,

I've been lurking around here for a few weeks already, so I thought I'd finally come out and show myself! I am a decidedly un-techy person living in Portland, OR, but recently I've been working on a project to get an online community site built, so that's sort of pulled me into the digital world. I was quite happy to have come across the Digital Divide - already I'm getting ideas for future directions with this project.

My project is to build a community for Burmese activists and refugees, primarily those living in Asia, but basically for activists living all over the world. I'm hoping it will be successful enough to lead into other activities, or getting involved in bringing more and better technology to refugees and activists in SE Asia - either through small grants to fund bills for internet and hardware, or getting involved in FOSS type work. Our developer is an Arakanese-Burmese living in India, who has his own small organization that does comp. training for monks and refugees. So that's already a step in the right direction, as we're paying to get him reconnected so he can continue and expand his work.

We've just kicked off a fundraising campaign, to raise the money to get our developer connected so he can continue with actually developing the site. I've got more information about that here, if anyone's interested in participating, (pretty please): http://ethnicvoices.civiblog.org/burmasolidaritynetwork

I'm looking forward to getting it running and see where it takes us, and getting involved in more issue-based discussions here.

Nice to meet you!

Cheers,

Tara Horn
