Being that it's summer session it's not busy. Directly in front of me is the new "Leisure Reading" collection. The collection was formed about 3 months ago and includes fiction, self-help, and other non-academic books. It was thought that patrons would like an area that is simular to a Starbucks or Borders in which to read. That assessment has turned out to be 100% correct, and the area is one of the busiest in the library. While I sit here and watch the traffic enter and exit the area, I realize it's the only part of the library that is still busy at this time of year. It's become an area for reading, group work, and socialization that seems to be popular with the students. I think this is an important observation because it highlights the different needs and wishes younger generation of library patrons demand. The term "Library as a place" is one that is often mentioned in our staff meetings, and I believe it's a valid approach. The approach has proved itself with the success of the leisure reading area, and can serve as an example of what patrons want." Getting Over the Digital Divide "I work and live in a working class neighborhood in Philadelphia. I see the hardships that people endure just to eat at times, let alone access the Internet. Philadelphia is currently in the process of turning the entire city into a wireless zone. That's great and all, but I have some concerns. The first neighborhood they installed the hardware in is very economically challenged. One look at the area and you would realize that computer connectivity isn't number 1 on their priority list. That made me thing about the Digital Divide. The ability to tap into a wireless network is only useful if these people actually own computer equipment. If people are struggling to pay for the minimum, how will they buy a computer to access this luxury?"
