The School of Information Studies at Syracuse University is a leading center for innovative programs in information policy, information behavior, information management, information systems, information technology, and information services. The School was founded in 1896 with an initial course in library economics, and it became the School of Information Studies in 1974, broadening its vision in response to the ever-expanding role of information in modern society. The nationally ranked school has degree programs at the undergraduate and master's levels and a research degree at the doctoral level. The School has 44 full-time faculty members who produce new knowledge and theory that infuse fresh curricula to prepare future information professionals. The School is ranked first in information systems, second in digital libraries, third in library science, and fourth in school library media by the 2006 U.S. News & World Report. The School is scheduled to occupy its completely renovated home in Hinds Hall, which is located in the heart of the University's main campus, by the end of 2007. Established in 1870, Syracuse University is one of the oldest and most comprehensive independent universities in the United States, offering a broad array of programs to more than 18,000 students through its 11 schools and colleges. The University is classified as a Carnegie Doctoral/Research University-Extensive institution and is a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities. Syracuse University seeks an administrative leader, entrepreneur and motivator to serve as its Dean of Information Studies. This individual may come from one of a number of disciplinary backgrounds including library science, management, computer science, information systems, education, psychology, economics, communications, public administration, or the humanities. Reporting to the Vice Chancellor and Provost, the Dean is the chief academic, administrative and fiscal officer of the School as well as the lead fundraiser.
