I was thinking the same thing, although Walter doesn't seem particular happy about the idea. On the other hand, I don't think he wants to drop the support for 10.6 yet. I think it should be fairly easy to port threadLocalVariables.c to D and include it in druntime. Although to would probably not be allowed to to license issues.
