Just to clarify, there are two prefixes: "\\?\" and "\\.\". The latter is used
to access the Win32 device namespace, which is a fairly under-the-hood thing.
The only way I see how this applies to our problem is to not prepend "\\?\" if
the path already has a "\\.\" prefix.
