I do think it's great that you and others are taking the initiative and doing
the work to improve things!
But, and I hate to rain on things, but I really like the existing logo and don't
think it needs improvement.
I have thought about making it into a gif, though, that very subtly pulses, or
something, like a video made of a tree where the leaves move slightly in the wind.
My idea would be the planet in the bottom half of the background would appear to
be slowly rotating, suggestive of the D and the moons being in orbit.
