It's a legacy issue. Clearly everybody except you is using CRTs for
gaming and whatnot. Therefore graphics hardware producers and game
vendors are doing what it takes to adapt to a fixed resolution.

Actually, not entirely true, although not for the reasons of old games. Some players of hardcore twitch FPS games (like Quake), especially professional players, still use CRTs, due to the near-zero input lag that LCDs, although having improved in that regard, are still not able to match exactly.

But other than that, I really see no reason to stick with CRTs vs a good LCD, yeah.
