I have read and heard *many* Hams especially new hams lately confused as to the Manufacture Date and Model Numbering Systems with most manufactures, since none of them mean anything to anyone but the manufacturer - especially ICOM and Kenwood and Yaesu.
Unless you where there when they came out you don't know which model came first or when it came out for which manufacturer. I was also confused, so I did some research on the internet. Finally I found what might just be the answer to your questions, it was for me. The two sites blow have links to the dates that QST came out with their review of certain model numbers for many manufacturers. The first link tells us that QST normally does the review about 6 months after the rig first comes out - The reviews are dated and so simply subtract about 6 mos from the date shown and that is when the model was first put on the market: This will also tell you which models came before which other models Since the numbers wont tell you anything. According to the following link (which tells what year a model was manufactured): http://www.ozgear.com.au/amateurinfo/equipment_ages.htm which in turn references this link as it's primary resource: http://www.arrl.org/tis/info/prodrev.html Hope this helps. 7&3 fer nw, Bob KE5CTY (old calls WB5ZQU - WY5L) 10X# 37210 FP#-1141 http://www.qsl.net/ke5cty/ Code may be taking a back seat for now, but the pioneering spirit that put the code there in the first place is out front of it all.
