Places like Newegg will sell you USB <--> RS-232 adapters for well 
under $20, delivered (see: 
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?
Submit=Go&DEPA=0&type=&description=usb+rs-
232&Category=0&minPrice=&maxPrice=&Go.x=0&Go.y=0 ).  If you live in 
an area with a good computer store you can probably also get one for 
$20 or less, and this gives you the opportunity for easy returns if 
it doesn't work.

Fry's will occasionally have them on sale for $9... I now have a 
spare from getting one at such a sale!
