Last night John, N3WT, and I had a PAX Q on 30 meters. The mode is very
similar to using HF packet. It is fairly slow and would not work well for
casual chatting, but I can see where it might be useful for a connected mode
for messaging.

When we did use unproto, you do have to be careful about when to transmit
since you can easily double with each other. You don't have as much control
with when the rig is keyed, since it sends in set blocks so it is easy to
unintentionally TX over the other station. You can adjust the block size
manually within limits. If in ARQ mode, it is not as fast, but if you do
double, it just retransmits. The S/N ratio was only +1 to +3 on my end
although he was showing +10. He is in MD and I am in SW Wisconsin.

If this had been an HF packet connection, I am doubtful that there would
have been and throughput but I have not been in connected mode that much
with HF packet since it is an inappropriate baud rate for HF except under
the very best of conditions.

The main point of all this is that ARQ modes can and do work on conventional
PC computers with sound cards at the weaker signal levels. For example, the
SCAMP mode that is being developed for Winlink 2000 (and will be eventually
be released under the GPL according to the author), works faster than Pactor
II but does require a bandwidth similar to Pactor III. Unfortunately, it can
not operate at the current protocols with a signal much under a 10 db S/N
ratio. (When it does work, it is stunning to see it move traffic). But with
other fall back positions, albeit slow, I am heartened that we will see some
sound card solutions coming for serious digital connected modes.

Rick, KV9U
