I would recommend the Icom IC-718 as a mid priced ($550 US) rig for PSK31, etc. A 500 hz or 250 hz CW filter is optional $$$ wise but the CW filter can be selected for the digital modes, unlike on the Yaesu FT-840. This rig can also be bought used on eBay in the $300-400 range.
 
I have a Yaesu FT-1000MP Mark V Field but use my IC 718 as a dedicated digital modes rig, as it's performance is close to the Mark V Field receiver wise. BTW I have a website with a quick review of the IC-718 at http://66.175.38.157/kn4lf51.htm .
