Hi Doc, I have and use my FT-890AT for ALE, it fails the SPLIT VFO test (QS/S) but otherwise is a fine radio for ALE in single channel operation and can be pressed into use for multi-channel within reason, you would not want to use it 24/7 and tax those relays. As far as TXCO is concerned, frequency stability to that level is not a real requirement.
Just about any HF SSB radio that is CAT capable and supported can be pressed into service for multi-channel ALE scanning. Just about any HF SSB radio (CAT is not required) can be used for single channel ALE use. I even use my venerable TS-930 for single channel ALE, an PIEXX board and it would be good for multi-channel as the SPLIT VFO requirement is supported. /s/ Steve, N2CKH/AAR2EY www.n2ckh.com >So, now I have a Yaesu FT-890AT (not ALE capable) a >TenTec 580/Delta (relay switching is noisy and too slow >for full ALE) and a Gonset G-76 (ancient boatanchor, no >chance of ALE though perhaps some simple digital modes). > >Any thoughts about these rigs? > >TenTec Omni VI+ is said to be excellent for digital modes >but I do not know about ALE. > >TenTec Jupiter also a solid rig, not sure about ALE. > >TenTec Argonaut V icludes the TCXO and fan kit and is >said to be PSK31-ready but ALE?
