the less bits you use, the more the quantization error, anyway acceptable
decoding is possible even with few bits (4 or 5). If you use high
samplerates you can reduce quantization noise because you can interpolate
the samples and simulate the missing bits.
8 bits are plenty, I remember my first implementation of PSK-31 was 8 bit
and worked very well. Later I started to use 16 bits just because the option
was there.
