Any computer mode has a disadvantage in needing an extra box and power to
run it. While the power isn't a problem if you're running a generator, if
you're running on battery, I think power draw in standby receive is
significant and may well force you into some strategies to minimize the
amount of time the computer is on.

But to really be useful one needs a printer. That's a 3rd box. And it
better not be a laser printer unless you've got a good sized generator.

In my limited experience, I agree with Bill. Hams frequently overemphasize
formal messages and long-haul comms. Tactical and short-haul needs are more
common. There is a place for digital communications in emergencies, but I
think it will be more center-to-center where you'll have some infrastructure
to support the setup rather then field-to-center.
