Today I was scanning ALE and linked up on an HFL NETCALL with Bob KN4HH on the 14109.5kHz ALE channel at about 2115UTC Sunday 23JUL06.
The propagation started out very bad, but after a few failed messages, we communicated via AMD (ALE Automatic Message Display) to change over to PSK31 at 1500Hz on the same ALE channel (14109.5kHz USB dial frequency). We were able to text on PSK31, starting with about 75% print, but the propagation then faded to less than 50% print. Bob was running 50W into an inverted-V and later increased to 100W. At that point I was running 300W power into a large loop... but it was a very hot day here in California... so my transistor linear amplifier soon went into thermal shutdown! We switched to Olivia (1000HzBW 32tone) at the same 1500Hz center audio frequency and continued with much better success at 80% to 100% print. During much of the Olivia part of the QSO I could only hear Bob's 100W signal with my ears occasionally deep in the noise. The Olivia performance today was very impressive. We ended just before 2200UTC so Bob could meet another HF schedule. Bonnie KQ6XA . ------------------------ Yahoo! Groups Sponsor --------------------~--> Yahoo! Groups gets a make over.
