I think that the key is non-proprietary and commonly
available, as well as low cost.

Outboard USB sound card devices are increasing in
popularity and some have speculated (no data yet)
that they *may* avoid some of the noise of internal
cards.

"Cheap" and "Ham" is less about using low quality
as it is about finding ways to make less costly
devices do amazing things!
