Do you suppose that what happens is that when a new mode comes out a lot
of us want to try it and then after some experience, make a decision
about its efficaciousness ... or not? And then may revert back to the
mode or modes that we do find work best for us?

For the bandwidth, I still like MFSK16 the most but often will call CQ
on 30 meters with no takers. I find Olivia too slow on most of its
modes, and the faster Olivia modes don't necessarily work that much
better than MFSK16 from my limited experience.

Many of the other modes, are not really all that much better. For
example, DominoEX with FEC was OK, but I am not sure why I would use
that mode over something else. In other words, there is no compelling
reason to use many of these modes as they don't stand out that much.
Mostly it is a tradeoff between bandwidth and ability to copy into the
noise or with higher speeds, etc.

Also, it is very confusing to have so many similar (but yet different)
modes where it the receiving station is not always sure what is being
transmitted and therefore can not decode it and return the call. The
Multipsk program is one of the few that has the ability to send a
waterfall graphic with mode information. I use that in most cases, but I
have seen numerous cases where this was not done.

I still think that we need to have specific spot frequencies on each
band, or at least on bands that are less used, e.g., 30 and 17 meters,
where operators can call CQ with the digital mode of their choice and
have the maximum chance of someone monitoring those frequencies.
