Rick, I've only been on DV for a short time, but it's easy to see that it's not a robust DX mode. As you mentioned, it would do much better on the upper HF bands where it's easier to achieve the SNR needed for solid copy.
Decoding seems to get choppy when the SNR drops below 10db or so and it could be that the mode needs at least that to work? The nighttime QRN on 40 meters is still high so DV is hard to do on this band with S-9 static crashes unless signals are well above the noise. On the other hand, it does a wonderful job on 20 meters with reasonable signal strengths. Hope to hear your "digitized' voice soon Rick...
