That raises the question of how you converted it.  You can scan a
document and convert to pdf, but then what you have is a pdf
description of a picture, so it is naturally pretty big.  Whereas
if you produce the pdf from the machine-readable text that is in
the file it should come out a lot smaller.

I have a multi-page document that is 138 megabytes in the source text
and goes to 244 megabytes in pdf.  So not too bad an expansion.
