Hi All

Indeed, I have encountered someone able to decode RTTY by ear - at least
well enough to copy callsigns whilst working a pileup! Chris Burger ZS6EZ
went into detail explaining to me how he developed his listening skill, and
demonstrated it as well, some years back whilst I was living in Johannesburg
and visiting his QTH outside Pretoria.

Those who know Chris will know that he is an outstanding CW operator, and he
developed his skill with decoding RTTY by ear during a DXPedition a number
of years back where he operated RTTY, working around 100 Q's per hour!

An amazing man, and a real education to speak to!

You can indeed learn to "copy" a bit of rtty. I used to be able to set and
hear someone call my government call sign in it. It is simply 5 level code,
and I have heard of one or two guys who could copy messages, but never saw
anyone do so. The REVS is quite easy to recognize. Just set rtty to idle
and you will hear that. Also RYRYRYRYRYR is no problem, if you hear it just
a few times. I would personally think that PSK was too fast, and besides
that, it is 8 level code.
