I had understood, perhaps incorrectly, that the TS480 provided for 
mechanical filters, i.e. the excellent Kenwood 500 or 250 hz filters.  
Those would not lie in the AF chain and instead would protect the AGC 
from pumping and would make a world of difference.  AF DSP filters are 
another story, of course.  For example, the DSP filtering in my FT-897 
is not much good for the digital modes in my opinion because they do not 
prevent strong adjacent signals from activating the AGC thereby 
desensitizing the radio.  For this reason I equipped it with a 300hz 
mechanical filter, which is a huge help when running digital.

If the AGC desensitizes the radio, that makes it that much more 
difficult for the software to "do the work."  The software is having to 
work with less signal rather than more.
