I can't help you with the ICON but on the Yaesu it will use
the band that is in the main display HF to UHF band.
if "split is selected the sub band will be the TX band
and the main band your RX band.

With the FT 847 for ISS I would use split mode 145.99 in the 
sub and 145.800 in the main.
