Any serious "routine" (see it as a program or a combination of lever 
movements) generates "didles" whenever there is no message to be 
transmitted.

"Cheapo" computer programs omitted diddles for simplicity.

But diddles is what identifies it aurally (or on a tuning oscilloscope) 
as RTTY signal and not N0N. You can tune quickly on diddles or RYRY, but 
not on a raw carrier (or at least it is not as simple and accurate).

A waterfall helps, but before it became the usual thing, you had to 
relay on a scope or some other tuning aid.

I added two LEDS as tuning aid to my KPC2 around 1992 and did 200 Hz 
AFSK using it as a dumb modem, but I was lost tuning someone without 
didles with only one lit LED.

It was a great time waster to have to wait for someene to press the keys 
while losing the text.
