I beleve your right. I had several " PHASE  " type
1950's SSB radios years ago and they used strange
ballanced/doubleblanced phaising to get SSB. They had
ZIP abilty to be moved around.

Otherwise they worked just fine .....

Today the FT-817 weights about the same as ONE of the
many phaising coils ....... Progress ...... you got to
love it.
