[digitalradio] Mic to speaker method of digital xmision

While awaiting  arrival of a new shack PC (SLOW ebay dealer) I have resorted
to using my laptop to receive digital modes and have even made a qso or two
my holding the rig's mic to the laptop speaker!    I am not able to hook-up
the laptop to my digital interface.  When using microphone to speaker and
manually PTTing, what would the best technique be for a cleaner signal ?
Low speaker volume and mic closer to speaker?  Louder volume and mic a
couple of inches away from speaker ?
