It's always a personal choice, of course, but personally I'd avoid
Yaesu. I have used the FT-857 at my local radio club station and would
not buy one for my own use.

I've ever had a Yaesu main station radio that I've felt really
comfortable with, and I have owned an FT-101ZD and a few VHF/UHF mobile
ones in my time, but I only use an elderly FT-817 for portable use with
my 10 and 24GHz transverters as there isn't really anything else
available that provides 432MHz all mode portable.

I did start out with Yaesu FT-290R radios, but rapidly found that their
HF big brothers were not radios that I got on with. Radios like the
FT-One, FT-102, FT-1000, FT-1000MP etc.

I have used Kenwood radios and liked them, such as the TS-830S and
TS-850S plus the Icom IC-706MKIIG and I now use a Kenwood TS-2000X for
almost all my Amateur work, apart from a SDR-IQ for serious receiving on
many bands or inputs from transverters.
