*Role and Responsibilities:*
The webmaster must perform a variety of technical tasks to ensure that the
Web site framework is adhered to, the Web site functions properly, and the
Web site can be accessed quickly by as many people as possible. These tasks
include:
- Ensuring the servers and browsers can properly handle web pages, portlets,
e-mail, transmit news, and download files.
- Confirming access using a variety of browsers or operating systems such as
Windows or Macintosh function equally well.
- Keeping up with changing technical standards in areas such as HTML
(hypertext markup language), HTTP (hyper-text transfer protocol), and XML
(extensible markup language) that affect the workings of the Web site.
- Ensuring web sites are secure enough that the client can control who has
access to confidential files yet open enough so that customers can easily
access relevant information. The webmaster shall coordinate with other
technical staff to ensure security protects the client's information from
hackers or others who may try to alter, steal or destroy it electronically.
- The webmaster shall maintain web sites as a valuable resource for the
enterprise and its customers. Maintenance is a more routine task than site
design and creation, but it occupies the majority of most webmasters' time
and effort.
*The webmaster shall:*
• Ensure sites are checked for bugs or other problems such as images that do
not load properly;
• Validate the links on the site regularly to make sure that they are in
working order
• Monitor visits to the site to determine if the site needs to be upgraded
to handle increased use.
• Through monitoring traffic on the sites, the webmaster also tracks how
often various pages, features, and links are used. This information is used
to update the Web site to make it more appealing and functional.
• Keeps abreast of new technology, understand how to implement it, and knows
which technologies will enhance the Web sites.
*Education and Training Requirements
*• A college degree is required in computer science, mathematics,
engineering, or design-related fields, or minimum five years demonstrated
experience as a webmaster working with enterprise level World Wide Web and
related computer applications.
• Must have proven experience as a webmaster responsible for enterprise
level intranet and internet web sites.
• Demonstrated technical skills and experience in programming languages is
required, such as C++ and Java.
• Knowledge of the Unix, Linux and Windows operating systems is also
required.
• Demonstrated expertise with Internet applications such as HTML, HTTP, and
XML.
• Certification from the International Webmasters Association is optional.
