Actually, I'd use it just like it is. Currently I'm experimenting with direct-fb by using a serial terminal for a command line, and I use that to start direct-fb on the local display/keyboard. I was considering trying out a terminal so I could also work directly from the local device. My display hardware only supports a framebuffer interface, so things like virtual terminals aren't an option.
