Doh! I just switched to Redhat 7.2 and am now using Grub for a 
bootloader.  Apparently, it ignores the 'append' command.  Therefore the 
mtrr request was ignored.  I figured out the right way to do it and 
everything works fine now.  Incidentally, I'm using a Voodoo3 and the 
vesafb driver.
