First of all a working framebuffer driver is required that exposes
an accelerator id and mmio regions (check output of "fbset -i").

You can then look at the nVidia DirectFB for example, it's not as
big as the NeoMagic or 3dfx driver which also would be a good point
to start.

There are some other people willing to write a Radeon driver or even
rewrite the Rage128 driver to support both chip families.
