If i do that, do I still need the FrameBuffer drivers installed in the kernel?

I don't know the answer to your question but you could try to install
SDL and use the latest CVS version of DirectFB. You can then run your
DirectFB apps under X11 by using the --dfb:system=sdl command-line
option. This has proven to be very useful for testing and development
purposes.
