yes, it allows to switch modes. Since my display is LCD and doesn't
scale (or at least it doesn't scale in a reasonable quality) changing
the resolution is not of much use. However from time to time I need
the possibility to change the color depth.
it also allows you to use the directfb savage driver, you cannot use the directfb savage driver with the vesa framebuffer driver.
