I noticed this while playing with multi-app support. Until I crawled through matroxfb code and fixed it I was unable to run X in 1600x1200x32bpp if I wanted to use mplayer at the same time. Those bastards! :) Speaking of multi-app support, I've seen some pretty nasty stuff with mplayer under XDirectFB. Things work fine the first time but subsequent mplayer runs fail. I noticed you added some layer related notes to the TODO list.
